Alumni Veteran Association
The newly established UDHS Alumni Veteran Association is excited to inform you about the association's mission and goals and invite you to become a member of this unique group that will serve to support and honor, as well as bring together, some of Upper Darby High School's finest alumni. Below is a brief outline of UDHSAVA's three primary goals:
- Support - One of the UDHSAVA's main goals is to serve and support any and all UDHS alumni veterans in various ways. In particular, the association will provide support for veterans who intend on enrolling in college or graduate school. Moreover, the association will assist veterans in making a career change or who are searching for work. Finally, the association, in collaboration with other established veteran organizations, will advocate for veterans to receive various benefits and services to which they are entitled.
- Honor - Another significant goal of the UDHSAVA is to better honor UDHS veterans and raise awareness of their past and continued service to their country. With annual events to celebrate UDHS alumni veterans, the UDHSAVA intends to enhance the Upper Darby and greater Delaware County community's recognition of our veterans' proud, selfless service. Moreover, the UDHSAVA eventually plans on developing new memorials to acknowledge UDHS graduates long and varied tradition of serving America, especially during times of war.
- Network - Finally, the UDHSAVA, with various annual events, will provide opportunities for UDHS alumni veterans to better engage and interact with one another in numerous ways. With opportunities to collaborate and share different experiences and knowledge with other vets, the UDHSAVA hopes to create a strong, supportive community committed to fostering unique bonds and increasing the overall recognition of Upper Darby's proud military veterans.

Tom Bernhardt - Class of 1991
Tom Bernhardt, Ph.D., Class of 1991,was honored by Millersville University in the Fall of 2016 as one of its Young Alumni of the Year. Tom is one of the rising stars of Harvard's Medical School and he is acknowledged as one of the world's leading microbiologists. To read more, please click here.

Caleb Livingston - Class of 2013
Caleb Livingston, Class of 2013, recently won the Ridge Riley Award given to the outstanding wrestler of the dual meet held at Rec Hall of Penn State University on Sunday, January 29, 2017. Caleb won his 165 pound match versus Northwestern to mark the first time in his career that he wrestled a home dual meet. To read more about Caleb's accomplishment, please click here.
Eugene Marinelli - Class of 2005
Eugene Marinelli, Class of 2005, cofounded and serves as CTO of Blend, a mortgage lending platform backed by Peter Thiel among other angel investors. Based in San Francisco, the company has raised $60 million since its 2012 start. Blend has 100 employees and its customers include Movement Mortgage, Mason-McDuffie and Guardian Mortgage. Blaine King - Class of 2014
Blaine King, Class of 2014, helped lead a walking vigil throughout Downtown Pittsburgh in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and in support of peaceful protesting and nonviolent resistance for civil and political activism. To read more about Blaine's efforts, please click here.
Alex Panes and Steve McCarrick - Class of 2016
Alex and Steve are both members of the Class of 2016 and current freshmen at Penn State's Main Campus majoring in Chemical Engineering. They recently won an award for their project titled "Repurposing Drill Cuttings from Fracking: Agregates for Asphalt and Concrete."
Cuong Trinh - Class of 2014
Graduate Cuong Trinh, a current junior at Drexel University, has been working in conjunction with Yale University on the optical calibration of the Precision Reactor Oscillation and SPECTrum (PROSPECT) reactor neutrino experiment. He presented his research at a physics conferece in Vancouver and now had his name on a recently published paper. Read his published work by clicking here.

Blaine King - Class of 2013
Upper Darby High School graduate Blaine King was recently awarded a scholarship for the upcoming 2016-17 academic year from the NAACP Pittsburgh.
King is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast reporting from Point Park University in Downtown Pittsburgh. He was honored May 5, 2016, at the NAACP Pittsburgh Chapter’s Awards Dinner at the Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh.
The NAACP scholarship recipients were chosen for the scholarships based upon their academic achievements, career goals, 500-word essay and recommendation letters.
“As a person of color, receiving this award from one of the most prestigious organizations in the country meant a lot to me. This award made me realize the opportunities people of color have today that my grandparents didn’t have," said King.
Shelby Miller - Class of 2012

Matt Rucci - Class of 2013
Elizabethtown College junior Matt Rucci, Class of 2013, has been selected to participate in a prestigious summer internship program with A Bridge for Children International in Beijing, China. Matt will be responsible for supporting staff members in industry research, program implementation, communications, event planning, and/or website development. Congratulations!
Trang To - Class of 2005

Peter Do - Class of 2010
Peter Do, Class of 2010, has won the Graduates Award in the prestigious inaugural LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers competition.
Margaret (Charley) Pearse - Class of 1977
Margie (Charley) Pearse is the lead author of two textbooks on teaching and learning. Her first book was published in 2011 from Corwin Press. It is presently rated #2 for best mathematics education in digital text.
Bruce Matthews - Class of 1963
Bruce Matthews graduated from University of Pennsylvania in May 1968, with a Commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After basic officers' schools and Airborne School, he went to Vietnam and served as an Infantry Officer from May '69 to Dec '70, first as a platoon leader and then as a Captain. After a 4 years, he began a 35 year career doing civil engineering and construction. He also taught in the firearms, security, and law enforcement fields.
In 2001, he changed his career focus to only security and teaching in firearms, security, and law enforcement. Since then he has been teaching security, private investigation, taser, 1st aid, CPR, AED, handcuffing, baton, pepper spray, 13 Virginia state security courses, 25 NRA firearms basic and instructor courses, Maryland concealed carry courses, anit-terrorism courses, firearms for law enforcement officers, and other similar subjects. He has recently worked as an armed security officer, an occasional Private Investigator, and a personal protection specialist (bodyguard) for a U.S. Senator.
Dr. Wilma Bulkin-Siegel - Class of 1954
Dr. Wilma Bulkin-Siegel was recently named president of the Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine, an organization dedicated to promoting the history of women in medicine and the medical sciences nationally and internationally.
Dr. Siegel is a 1954 graduate of Upper Darby High School and received a full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. After earning her medical degree, she became a renowned oncologist in New York City. Most recently she founded Wilma's Studio, an art program at Columbia University's Graduate Program in Narrative Medicine. The program continues Dr. Siegel's work to use art in helping pediatric patients, as well as patients of all ages, with cancer and AIDS.
