Monday October 14--No School

Welcome to Garrettford and to First Grade!!!  We have been waiting for you!!!!

A bit about me...

I have been teaching for 26 years--15 of which at the elementary level. First Grade is my thing!  I love watching students grow in all areas!  My students know that mistakes are allowed and celebrated!  Additionally, my students know well that they need to exercise their bodies and their brains. The brain is something we can change and grow.  So no more "I can't do it"!  Our new mantra is " I can't do it, YET!"

My daughter Katie lives in Maryland and works in PR!  My son Andrew is a senior at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY.  It is cold there, but a dynamite university! Both of my children went through the Upper Darby school system! They learned so much and were well prepared for college and beyond!  My turtle, Jeff, is 11 years old. Jeff is a Russian Tortoise who should be living at Colgate!! I love my profession, my family, my students, and my pets--those here and gone.  I also love reading, walking, cycling, swimming, and the beach. Penn State football is my passion on fall weekends.  Let's go State!

Class Announcements

  • PLEASE!!!!Read aloud to your your child everyday!  This is the single most important thing you can do to cultivate good readers.  Remember to ask lots of questions about what you have read.  Invite your child to WONDER about about books, themselves, and the world as he or she interacts with stories.  Additionally, have your child read just right books to you--those that are able to be read with few errors.  Enjoy and trust the process!

  • Continue to practice sight/"exception" words with your children.  It is all about visualizing--use the camera in your brain to take pictures of words that just don't follow the rules! Along with the words that the students can blend/those that follow patterns, the sight words are critical to reading success. The more you read, the more that you will know, and the more places you will go! GOOD LUCK!
