    The children will plan and draft their imaginative narratives this week.

     

    Math

    We will continue to practice counting money this week.  The amount of money will be more than $1.  It is important for the children to practice counting real money at home.  They need to know the names and values of the money, as well as be able to skip count by 5s, 10s, and 25s.  At the end of the week, our lessons will move on to telling time.

     

    Science

    The children have been enjoying our experiements with change.  This week our experiements will be focused on mixing solids and liquids and the changes that occur.

    Our grammar focus is how to use commas in a series of nouns and verbs.

    The children will be creating made up characters and then writing imaginative narratives about those characters and their adventures.

    Math

    We started Ch. 7 last week.  This week the children will practice counting money and finding total values.  It is very important for the children to practice recognizing money and then counting it.  A good activity is to give your child a handful of coins for them to separate and then practice counting different mixes.

     

    Science

    Last week, the children mixed solids together and then separated them.  This week they will try and separate the liquids from the solids that we mixed together on Friday.

    This week the children will take their Module 6 Assessment in Reading & Language Arts.

     

    writing

    The children will write their weather poems this week.

     

    math

    We will be finishing Ch. 6 this week.  Our lessons will focus on regrouping with zeros this week.  After practice and review of 3-digit addition and subtraction, as well as word problems, the children will take their test next week.

     

    science

    Last week the children completed their first experiments in the Changes unit.  This week, the experiments will be observing liquids and mixing & separating solids.

    This week the children will be writing poetry about weather.  They will choose between two types of poem formats.  They will choose between a cinquain or a sensory poem.

    I have been so proud of how well the children have been doing with their 3-digit addition.  This week we will begin working on 3-digit subtraction.

     

    Science

    The children will do their first experiments this week about changes.  For the first experiment, the children will see what happens when they put a solid into a liquid.  The next experiment with be an "ice race".  They are very excited to start the experiments!

    We have begun our Science lessons.  Our first science tub will be Changes.  The children will do experiments with the 3 states of matter to see how they change.

    The children will begin to write their personal essays this week.  The topic for their essays is what makes them unique.

     

    Math

    We will continue to practice 2-digit subtraction with and without regrouping.  This tends to be a more difficult concept for some students.  Below you will find the steps to follow when completing a 2-digit subtraction problem.

    1- Look at the ones. (Do I have enough   to subtract?  Bottom, Bigger, Borrow)

    2- Regroup if necessary. (Take 1 ten and trade it in for 10 ones.)

    3- Subtract the ones.

    4- Subtract the tens.

    *If regrouping is not necessary, go right to step 3.

    Our lessons this week will be on our new chapter (Chapter 5).  The focus of Ch. 5 is 2-digit subtraction with and without regrouping. This tends to be a difficult strategy for some students.  I will be working with students in small groups and one on one to help guide them through this skill.  Please let me know if your child has any difficulty with their math homework.  The students will be given steps to follow and with practice, will master this skill.

     

    SS

    We have moved onto our next Social Studies chapter.  Ch. 7 focuses on service jobs that people have in our community.

    There are no new Reading & Language Arts lessons this week.  The children will be taking their Module 4 Assessment this week.  They will also be completing their imaginative stories this week.

     

    Math

    We finished Ch. 4 last week. This week, the children will take their chapter test.  We will also continue to practice 2-digit addition and word problems.

     

    SS

    Our next chapter is focused on how goods are grown and made.  The children will also learn how goods get to our stores so that we can purchase them.
