Beverly Hills Middle School
September 8, 2019
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope your student is feeling comfortable and confident as they are getting settled into Beverly Hills. They are off to a good start. My name is Mary Byrnes, and I have your student for Language Arts. We meet every day for forty-eight minutes in room 102. I enjoy working with your child and look forward to a successful year.
We are very busy in Language Arts as we cover reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and many skills and strategies that support learning to be successful readers and writers for life. Organization is critical for our sixth graders, and if we can work to establish it now, this valuable skill will carry them through their school career. My LA students need a 3-subject notebook, or binder every day in class. If my students have a single subject notebook, I supply tabs to divide it into three sections. Please check that your student is keeping their LA work in one notebook. They also need a pocket folder, loose-leaf paper, a red pen, and a supply of pencils.
Homework counts! I post my homework for the week and review it with the students on Monday. Homework is important as it extends and reinforces the classroom learning. A planner would be a helpful tool for the students to copy their homework down each day. Please be sure that your child is reading every day. They have a reading log to record their reading that they must hand in on Fridays to receive credit. I cannot stress enough the importance of reading daily. Reading aloud is great practice, too. I take my classes to the school library every other week to check out books. In addition, they are welcome to borrow books from my class library.
Please do not hesitate to e-mail me at any time with questions or concerns at firstname.lastname@example.org. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you for the privilege of working with your child; I am sure that together we can make this a great year. If you would like to share any other information about your child please write a note or e-mail. I would love to hear from you. Thanks again.
Ms. Mary Byrnes
