Responsive Classroom Approach
I am trained in the Responsive Classroom Approach- an evidence-based approach to teaching and discipline that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness. The goal is to create a safe, joyful, and engaging classroom community where students develop strong social and academic skills and every student can thrive.
Some aspects of the day that are drawn from RC are Morning Meeting, Brain Breaks (also called Energizers), and using Reinforcing Language.
How does this relate to classroom rules?
In keeping with this approach, I guide students in a discussion about their hopes and dreams for themselves during the first week of school. We discuss ways in which we can help ourselves and others achieve these hopes and dreams. From there, we create a succinct list of rules to follow for the year. We display the rules on a poster with all of the students' signatures and refer back to these agreed-upon rules as we navigate the school year!
