English Learners (EL)
Program Description
The Upper Darby School District English Language Learners (ELL) curriculum team is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting instructional strategies and resources tailored to the needs of students whose first language is not English. The ELL curriculum team aims to ensure equitable access to education for all students, supporting both their academic and language development needs. Key responsibilities typically include:
- Curriculum Development: Designing and adapting curricula that integrate language development with grade-level content, ensuring accessibility for ELL students while aligning with state and national standards.
- Assessment and Progress Monitoring: Implementing language proficiency assessments and tracking student progress in language acquisition and academic achievement.
- Professional Development: Providing ongoing training for teachers and staff on best practices for teaching ELL students, including differentiated instruction, language scaffolding techniques, and cultural sensitivity.
- Support Services: Offering resources and strategies for classroom teachers to support ELL students, such as language intervention programs, tutoring, and after-school services.
- Parent and Community Engagement: Facilitating communication with non-English-speaking families, providing resources, and fostering an inclusive school environment that respects diverse cultures.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Working with other district departments (e.g., special education, gifted and talented) to ensure comprehensive support for ELL students.
UDSD Policy on English Learners
In accordance with the Board's philosophy to provide a quality educational program to all students, the district shall provide an appropriate planned instructional program for identified students whose dominant language is not English. The goal of the program shall be to increase the English language proficiency of eligible students so that they can attain the academic standards adopted by the Board and achieve academic success. Students who have Limited English Proficiency (LEP) shall be identified, assessed and provided instruction, and shall be provided an equal opportunity to achieve their maximum potential in educational programs and extracurricular activities, consistent with federal and state regulations.
