Mr. Mark Furey
This is the start of my 39th year as an educator in the Upper Darby School District. During that time period I have worked at Upper Darby High School, Highland Park, Bywood and Hilcrest Elementary schools. Currently I am the Department Chair for Technology Education and have been instrumental in shaping the direction of the curriculum over the past 17 years. I have also held positions as: District Supervisor for Technology Education, Chapter 1 Supervisor and the Principal of Westbrook Park Elementary School. All of which I have enjoyed and have strengthed my ability as a classroom teacher.
During my years at the high school I have coached Wrestling and Girl's Track of which I was head coach for six years. During my coaching career several wrestlers medaled at states and one achieved runner up status. The Track experience produced a state champion in two events that earned she and I a week at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs which I still remember vividly years later.
Over the past several years I have taught courses in Wood Technology, Wood and Materials and Construction. In each of these couses safe tool use, career exploration and problem solving using tools and measurement are stressed. Students take safety tests before they can use machinery and demonstrate competence through guided practice in front of the teacher.
I tell my students that I haven't worked a day in 39 years, meaning that when you love what you do it is not work. I encouage them to try to find something that they will be passionate about so that they may be lucky enough to have a similar experience.
