• Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Upper Darby School District and Bywood Elementary School strive to create a safe, respectful, and responsible learning community for our school. In an effort to continue to improve our school environment, the faculty and students at Bywood Elementary School, have worked together to form a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) Program. The focus of this plan is to create a positive school community that promotes being safe, respectful, and responsible, so that every student is ready to learn.

What Is School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all children by making targeted misbehavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.

Please take some time to review with your child the positive behavior expectations described on the Behavior Matrix found below. Ask your child to make sure he/she understands the expectations in different locations around school. Please discuss the importance of these concepts and encourage your child to be a respectful, responsible, and a safe Bywood Elementary School member. With your continued support and involvement, Bywood Elementary will continue to be a place where students can excel in a safe and productive environment. Research shows that when home and school work together, student achievement is guaranteed. We look forward to working with you as true partners in your child’s education.
