From November 2018 until January 2019, the Search Consultants have been actively recruiting qualified candidates for the position.
At the close of the application, there were thirty-four (34) formal applications for the Superintendent of Schools vacancy. The break-down of applicants is as follows:
We received 23 applications from sitting superintendents or assistant superintendents (13 from PA and 10 Out of State).
We received 11 applications from candidates who have their PA letter of eligibility but are not currently in a superintendent or assistant superintendent role.

Superintendent Search History
Please check this page for periodic updates on the search for a new superintendent of the Upper Darby School District.
On June 12, 2018, Superintendent Daniel G. Nerelli announced to the Upper Darby Community that he had accepted a position as superintendent of the Chichester School District, effective September 10, 2018. You can read Mr. Nerelli's letter to the community by clicking here.
Also on June 12, 2018, the Upper Darby Board of School Directors made the following statement:
"The Board of School Directors congratulates Dan Nerelli on his appointment as the new Superintendent of the Chichester School District. While we are all very sorry to see him go, we appreciate that he is honoring his contract. His last day in Upper Darby will be September 10th. Through that time, he will be working with the rest of our District’s wonderful leadership team to ensure a smooth start to the school year. Over the next few weeks, the Board will determine the path it will follow to replace Mr. Nerelli and will update you on those plans and any progress at the School Board Committee Meeting on June 21st."
At the June 21, 2018 School Board Committee Meetings, School Board President Rachel Mitchell announced that the Board would be interviewing search agencies on June 26, 2018:
"I am sorry to see Mr. Nerelli leave the Upper Darby School District, but I am happy that Mr. Nerelli will be staying with us until September 10, 2018. The board will be meeting with search firms on June 26th to explore their options to hire a new Superintendent. There will be periodic updates at future meetings."
At the July 10, 2018 School Board Meeting, School Board President Rachel Mitchell announced that the Board met with two search firms on June 26th:
"The Board did meet with two search firms on June 26th and the Board is currently weighing their options. We have created a page on the website to post periodic updates. The Board intends to appoint an acting superintendent to perform the duties of the superintendent while the Board weighs their options."
At the July 24th Special Meeting preceeding the Committee Meetings, School Board President Rachel Mitchell announced the selection of Dr. Daniel P. McGarry as the Acting Superintendent for the 2018-19 School Year:
"As you know, the School Board received the untimely resignation of Mr. Nerelli as our superintendent. Mr. Nerelli will remain with the district until September 10, 2018 and ensure a smooth start to the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. The Board of School Directors has begun the process of gathering the information necessary to appoint our next superintendent. From the information that we gathered from the two search firms we met with in June, the Board believes that the first step in the search process is to appoint an Acting Superintendent. The Board of School Directors has decided to act swiftly to provide the school community with the consistent confidence we have in our current leadership. The Board has chosen Dr. Daniel P. McGarry as the Acting Superintendent for the 2018-2019 school year. Dr. McGarry’s proven leadership, dedication, and passion for our school community will ensure a smooth transition while the Board works with the Delaware County Intermediate Unit as they lead our search process. The School Board is confident that Dr. McGarry will be able to lead the school district during this interim process with excellence and a district-wide improvement strategy. Please join us on August 14th and September 11th at 7pm in the Upper Darby High School Performing Arts Center for a Meet and Greet with Dr. McGarry prior to the August and September School Board meetings. Dr. McGarry will also be visiting schools to meet with our stakeholders throughout the month of September. Information on the September school visits will be communicated through your principals in the back-to-school communications. The Board will be working with the Delaware County Intermediate Unit and will proceed with a thorough search process that will produce the absolute best decision for the next leader of the Upper Darby School District. Phase One with the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, "Planning the Search", will occur this summer. The Board anticipates that Phase Two, “Community and Staff Input”, will be completed prior to our December winter break. This phase will include focus groups and surveys consisting of students, staff, parents, and community members. The Board, with the help of Mrs. Spino, has developed a page on our website where the Superintendent Search timeline, once it is developed, will be published. The page is under the School Board tab on our website, https://www.upperdarbysd.org/domain/1599. The page is designed to keep the school district community informed during the entire search process. Thank you for your support."
At the September 11th School Board Meeting, School Board President Rachel Mitchell announced the following regarding the Superintendent Search:
