Department Overview

Studies done by The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that the school bus is the safest vehicle on the road. The Upper Darby School District transportation department owns and maintains a fleet of 131 school buses, used to transport nearly 7,000 students to over 160 schools in 5 counties. When fully staffed, the department employs 130 bus drivers and 60 bus assistants. In addition to the school bus fleet, the Transportation Supervisor also oversees the management of records and compliance of 40 Facilities, Maintenance, Food Service and Public Safety vehicles.

Bus schedules are designed by the transportation office during the summer. As student ridership changes throughout the school year, bus schedules are modified and adjusted in order to maintain an efficient transportation system. All bus routes are subject to change to meet the vast needs of all our student riders.

REMINDER: Before a bus assignment can be established, all students must be registered with the Upper Darby School District through our Central Registration department (Click here to visit the Central Registration home page). This applies to all public and non-public students. For the 2017-18 school year, registration is only necessary if your child is a first-time student, if a student is attending a new school, or if a student's address has changed.

Bus Driver Shortage - A National Epidemic

It is a national crisis. A recent national survey revealed that the vast majority of school bus service contractors and school organizations in the United States are facing a school bus driver shortage that would be characterized as moderate to severe.

It isn't easy to find or retain bus drivers. As we all work together to overcome this challenge, we appreciate the patience of our loyal and dedicated school bus drivers who pitch in to help out when we are short staffed. In times of driver shortage, we spend a great deal of time splitting and combining bus routes to provide full coverage and deliver our students as quickly and safely as possible.
