Student Attendance

    Purpose

     

    The Board requires that school age students enrolled in district schools attend school regularly, in accordance with state laws. The educational program offered by the district is predicated upon the presence of the student and requires continuity of instruction and classroom participation in order for students to achieve academic standards and consistent educational progress.

     

    Lawful/Excused Absences

     

    The Board considers the following conditions to constitute a reasonable cause for absence from school or an excused absence:

     

    1. Illness, including if a student is dismissed by designated district staff during school hours for health-related reasons.[2][5]
       
    2. Obtaining professional health care or therapy service rendered by a licensed practitioner of the healing arts in any state, commonwealth or territory.[2]
       
    3. Quarantine.
       
    4. Family emergency.
       
    5. Recovery from an accident or other health-related issue.
       
    6. Required court attendance.
       
    7. Death in family.
       
    8. Observance of a religious holiday observed by a bona fide religious group, upon prior written request from the person in parental relation.[10]
       
    9. Family educational travel, upon written request from parents/guardians with prior written approval from the building principal. No educational travel will be approved for students required to take PSSA, Keystone or other state-mandated testing during mandatory testing periods.
       
    10. Educational tours and trips, upon written request from parents/guardians with prior written approval from the building principal. No educational tours/trips will be approved for students required to take PSSA, Keystone or other state-mandated testing during mandatory testing periods.
       
    11. Non-school-sponsored educational tours or trips, if the following conditions are met:
       
      1. The person in parental relation submits documentation for excusal prior to the absence. If the person in parental relation submits documentation after the absence, the principal may approve the absence as excused. The district will permit excused absences for non-school-sponsored educational tours or trips up to five (5) consecutive days.
         
    12. College or postsecondary institution visit, with prior approval by the principal.
       
    13. Other urgent reasons that may reasonably cause a student’s absence, as well as circumstances related to homelessness and foster care.[2][5][11][12]
       
    14. The district will permit excused absences for family emergencies up to ten (10) consecutive days. If an absence is more than ten (10) consecutive days, the district will encourage the family to withdraw after those ten (10) days and enroll in the local school. If the family does not withdraw the student from school, the district will disable the district-owned technology.
